History

The Anime Milwaukee Convention (AMKE), held at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM)[1] until 2011, is a Japanese animation convention in the city of Milwaukee. It was established in February 2007 by the Japanese Animation Association, which is a student organization at UWM. The first convention was held in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Student Union with low attendance due to a blizzard. It has since been referred to as con 0.5 as a result, and the subsequent years were deemed 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 to carry on that tradition,[2] but the 0.5 has been dropped and now the year is used. Anime Milwaukee began as a one day event but quickly branched into a three day convention over a weekend. The convention also started off as free for all attendees, but soon needed registration fees to provide bigger and better events in subsequent years. Regular badges are now priced between $25 to $40, dependent on date of purchase, and how many days they will be attending. Children under 6 are free and there are $80 VIP badges.[3] In 2010, the convention partnered with the Radisson Hotel Milwaukee, offering a con discount for hotel rooms.[4] In February 2011, the convention was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Milwaukee, and larger events took place in the Frontier Airline Center.[5]

The Anime Milwaukee Convention is helped, run by members of the Japanese Animation Association,[2] and is further supported and planned with the help of other conventions, such as Geek.kon,[6] members the Vision of Anime club,[7] and local anime fans. The convention is a volunteer run organization and accepts volunteers before and at the time of the convention. Volunteers can get a free weekend badge after a predetermined number of hours of volunteer work.[8]

The Anime Milwaukee convention experienced media coverage in 2010. The Morning Blend talk show featured an AMKE segment on March 5, 2010.[9] The Milwaukee A.V. Club wrote an article about Anime Milwaukee and the article was posted on March 8, 2010.[10] Also, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also wrote an article about Anime Milwaukee.[11]
